Congressional Inquiry Calls for Documents from DePaul University in Preparation for May 7 Hearing
Congress ask for documents from the university ahead of the House Committee on Education & Workforce summit in May
Just a few days after Grant & Eisenhofer and co-counsel The Lawfare Project filed a lawsuit on behalf two Jewish students who were assaulted on DePaul University’s campus while peacefully protesting for Israel, the suspected attacker, Adam Erkan, was arrested. He is facing four felony charges and is being detained in the Cook County Jail in Chicago while the Prosecutor’s Office and Chicago Police Department continue working to find a second suspect. Once found, they are likely to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
On April 21, 2025, a few days after Erkan’s arrest, members of Congress sent DePaul University a letter asking for the release of certain records in advance of a May 7th hearing before the House Committee on Education & Workforce. Congress called on the university’s president, Robert L. Manuel, to testify regarding the school’s responses to handling alleged antisemitic incidents on campus. The two Jewish students who were attacked, Michael Kaminsky and Max Long, filed a lawsuit alleging that DePaul University failed to protect them, even stating that a DePaul police officer saw the attacks taking place but never intervened.
Grant & Eisenhofer is proud to represent these students and remains committed to fighting for accountability, hoping this lawsuit sends a clear message to universities to take stronger action against antisemitism as well as creating safe and inclusive environments for all students.
