In May 2019, the Connecticut Attorney General’s Office got the green light to create a civil rights division after the Connecticut House of Representatives approved the initiative in an 82-63 vote. Attorney General William Tong, whose election platform focused heavily on the establishment of the division, joins more than 20 other state Attorneys General who similarly oversee civil rights divisions for their states. Under House Bill 7222, Attorney General Tong is able to investigate civil rights violations and bring civil suits on behalf of plaintiffs. “This bill strengthens the ability of the Office of the Attorney General to proactively seek justice for those whose rights and liberties have come under attack,” Tong said.
