Mayor Mike Spano Opens Up About Traumatizing Child Sexual Abuse in Interview

| Grant & Eisenhofer P.A. Civil Rights | Blog & News

As a boy of 12, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano was sexually assaulted by a man near his home. For years, he carried around feelings of shame about what happened to him, as his family never talked about the abuse as Spano grew up. Now, he is sharing his story and inspiring others to have the courage to do the same in an effort to stop child sexual abuse.

Spano shared his child sexual abuse story in an interview with Maria Trusa, founder of nonprofit Yo Digo No Más (Spanish for “I Say No More”), for her talk show. The interview will air on YouTube on Wednesday January 18, 2023.

“This is an important conversation,” Spano said, as survivors don’t often open up about what happened to them. He hopes that he can help other survivors feel validated and encouraged to come forward with their experiences to let their healing process begin.
