More Harassment and Discrimination Protections for New York Employees
New anti-harassment laws recently signed by New York’s governor aim to provide additional support for the state’s employees. Senate Bill S812B establishes a toll-free, confidential hotline that employees working in New York can call if they need help with workplace harassment complaints. Additionally, Senate Bill S5870 broadens the New York State Human Rights Law’s meaning of “retaliation” to further protect employees that have complained of discrimination. It will now include “revealing or releasing an employee’s personnel file, or any information included in the file, in response to an employee opposing an unlawful discriminatory practice.”
More bills concerning harassment and discrimination are also pending before the Assembly, having passed the Senate, including an extension of the statute of limitations for employees to file a harassment or discrimination lawsuit.
