NY Attorney General Files Sex Abuse Suit Against Catholic Diocese
In a new lawsuit brought by the New York Attorney General, three bishops from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo are accused of covering up sexual abuse by over two dozen priests. The allegations, which purportedly took place for years, violate church policy and state law.
The Attorney General’s suit aims to apply civil laws to sue the Catholic diocese for failing to abide by church policies known as the Dallas Charter established in the early 2000s. These policies were enacted after five Roman Catholic priests were prosecuted for sex abuse of minors in 2002 when results of an investigation were reported. The lawsuit also seeks to change the way sex abuse claims are handled by Catholic diocese.
Further, the sexual assault lawsuit attempts to ban two bishops from management in any charitable group—and accuses the two men of covering up sexual abuse claims against over two dozen priests.
If you or someone you love is a survivor of sexual abuse, you may have legal options to file a sexual harassment or sexual assault lawsuit.
