School Resource Officer Convicted of Sexual Misconduct

| Grant & Eisenhofer P.A. Civil Rights | Blog & News

School resource officers are present in about half of schools across the country as many school districts are seeking ways to help keep students safe. However, for students at Lansing Eastern High School in Michigan, their protected learning environment was compromised. School resource officer Matthew Priebe, a 10-year veteran on the force, was convicted of sexually assaulting three female students and sentenced to jail. He reportedly engaged in nonconsensual sexual acts with the students, including criminal sexual conduct against a minor.

According to research from a police crimes database, from 2005-2011, over 30 arrests of school resource officers were made concerning sexual misconduct. While those numbers may seem relatively low, amounting to fewer than five arrests per year among schools that provided data, it is important to remember that sexual misconduct often goes unreported.
