Sex Abuse Claims Against Catholic Priest Brought in North Carolina

| Grant & Eisenhofer P.A. Civil Rights | Blog & News

A December 2020 lawsuit alleges a North Carolina Catholic priest sexually assaulted an altar boy on church property for several years. The plaintiff, now in his 20s, was between the ages of five and seven years old when the alleged assaults occurred. The defendant priest had already served an eight-year prison sentence for sex crimes and was defrocked.

The plaintiff was able to bring his claims many years after the assaults occurred as a result of the North Carolina SAFE Child Act, which was enacted in November 2019. The SAFE Child Act essentially opens up a “window” in the statute of limitations, allowing survivors of child sex abuse to bring claims that would otherwise have been untimely. Similar laws have extended the statute of limitations in other states as well, including New York and California.
