Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Calvert Hall College High School Come a Week After Amendments Made to the Maryland Child Victims Act

After decades of alleged sexual abuse, multiple survivors are coming forward with claims against clergy and staff at the Calvert Hall College High School while lawyers urge Gov. Wes Moore to re-evaluate amendments proposed to the Maryland Child Victims Act.

On Monday, April 14, 2025, a press conference was held in Maryland amid new allegations of sexual abuse occurring at Calvert Hall College High School, an all-boys Catholic preparatory school. The Calvert Working Lawyers Group, a team of seven law firms, jointly announced their representation of 30 survivors who came forward with sexual abuse allegation against Calvert Hall occurring between the years 1970-1990. G&E’s Advocacy Consultant Patrick Wall shared that there have been at least eight perpetrators at the school since 1942 and three are still alive. The survivors claim that the school ignored credible complaints of abuse and intimidated or dismissed survivors when they reported their abuse to the school’s leadership; allowing the perpetrators continued access to students. The attorneys argue that “Calvert Hall prioritized its reputation over the safety of its students” and that they deserve justice.

This all comes just one week after Maryland lawmakers proposed amendments to the Maryland Child Victims Act which would sharply limit the amount of money survivors can recover. The proposed legislation, House Bill 1378, would cap the amount of compensation to a maximum of $700,000 if survivors were abused by a private institution and $400,000 if by a governmental agency. Additionally, HB1378 would modify the “per incident” payout, meaning that no matter how many times or by how many people a survivor was sexually abused, the survivor may only receive one cap on pain and suffering damages—which many believe sends a concerning message about sexual abuse and justice.

Although the Calvert Working Lawyer Group, announced they plan to file lawsuits before the proposed legislation takes effect in June, they continue to urge the Governor to re-evaluate the decision to sign the bill, arguing that humanity should be more important than a bottom line.
