Discrimination Affects LGBTQ People of Color in Disproportionate Ways: New Study

Research out of Cornell University indicates “shockingly disproportionate harms” imposed upon LGBTQ people of color. The research, released by several LGBTQ rights organizations, shows that discrimination takes place among black LGBTQ individuals at a disproportionate rate compared to white LGBTQ people. This discrimination, fueled by racism and anti-LGBTQ agendas, leads to harm concerning economic insecurity, decline in mental and physical health, and attempts of suicide, the research notes.

The research also indicates that 43% of LGBTQ people of color experienced some kind of discrimination in the past year, while 31% of white LGBTQ people surveyed experienced discrimination. Additionally, the research states that about half of the 5.5 million LGBTQ people of color in the U.S. live in states that do not have protections from discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, with the majority of black LGBTQ Americans living in the south and in low-income households. Suicide attempts due to discrimination are also higher among the black LGBTQ community, whose youth face twice the rate of suicide attempts compared to youth who were not discriminated against (27% vs. 12%).
