G&E Attorneys Speak on Maryland Child Victims Act Panel
This week, G&E’s Steve Kelly and Suzanne Sangree spoke on a panel hosted by the Maryland Association for Justice covering the Maryland Child Victims Act of 2023. Moderated by Jenner Law, “Representing Survivors of Institutional Sexual Abuse” panelists discussed the components of a case filed against institutions responsible for childhood sexual abuse as well as the history behind the Child Victims Act. The speakers discussed the information required to investigate, evaluate, and litigate civil claims on behalf of abuse survivors in Maryland, including trauma informed lawyering and damages.
In the state of Maryland, the Child Victims Act of 2023 lifted the statute of limitations for survivors of childhood sexual abuse to file a civil lawsuit. G&E and co-counsel represent many of these survivors who now have the opportunity to hold the institutions who failed to safeguard children from their assailants accountable for their failures. The bill’s passage came after the release of a Maryland Attorney General grand jury report outlining hundreds of claims of child sex abuse in the Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore spanning over 80 years. The report exposes publicly the names of dozens of clergy members who skirted their transgressions for decades.
