Massachusetts Doctor Indicted on Two Counts of Rape, Accused of Sexually Assaulting Over 200 Patients
Former rheumatologist—who specialized in joint, muscle, and bone conditions—allegedly performed unnecessary pelvic, breast, and rectal exams; sexually assaulting hundreds of women, and several men, over the course of his career.
More than 200 women have spoken out against Dr. Derrick Todd, a former rheumatologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, filing a class action lawsuit against him for his transgressions. In the lawsuit, the survivors claim that Todd “breached his duty of care when he performed inappropriate bodily examinations, practiced gynecological medicine in an unauthorized manner, and sexually assaulted patients under the auspices of providing medical care.” A rheumatologist practices medicine relating to the joints, muscles, and bones, as well as autoimmune diseases and rare inherited disorders—but not gynecological medicine.
The class action lawsuit was filed in 2023, on behalf of 120 women. Since then, dozens more of Todd’s patients have come forward, ranging in age from their teens to their 60s. The alleged abuse traces back to 2010. Todd was arraigned on January 17, 2025, and pled not guilty.
Just last week, Todd was indicted by a Middlesex County grand jury for two counts of rape. The two assaults were alleged to have occurred in December of 2022 and in June of 2023, during their medical examinations. Other investigations into Todd’s alleged misconduct are ongoing.
