Sexual Assault Lawsuit Against Former Indiana University Basketball Team Doctor Grows As Another Ex-Player Comes Forward
The class-action lawsuit has been joined by a fourth former player; lawsuit alleges that the university knew Dr. Bradford Bomba Sr. had been accused of giving players unnecessary medical exams 45 years ago
Four former Indiana University basketball players have now accused team doctor Bradford Bomba Sr. of sexual assault. The lawsuit was initially filed in 2024 when a former Indiana University player came forward alleging sexual abuse from then-team physician Dr. Bomba after Bomba conducted “unnecessary” rectal exams. Now, with a fourth former team member coming forward with similar allegations, the plaintiffs are seeking to file a second amended class-action lawsuit. Plaintiffs contend that the University failed to protect them against the abuse, even though they told their coach, Bobby Knight, about the abuse in 1979. Knight coached the Hoosiers from 1971 to 2000.
The class action lawsuit, amended for the second time as a Title IX violation, includes the fourth player’s allegations that current team trainer, Tim Garl, allowed alleged sexual abuse to occur. According to court documents, Garl allegedly made jokes at the players’ expense about the rectal exams they went through. Similar to the other former players, this fourth plaintiff claims he was subjected to “systemic sexual assaults and sex-based harassment under the guise of medical care” by Bomba.
Title IX was designed to protect students from sexual predators by requiring colleges and universities receiving federal funds to implement safeguards—and adequately respond to complaints of abuse. When these protections are violated and/or mishandled, students (or former students) are eligible to file Title IX claims. All four players in the Indiana University lawsuit allege that the University mishandled its response to known sexual abuse, failing to protect them from the predator; filing the amended lawsuit against both Garl and the University.
