New Technology Aims to Stop Cyberbullying
A 20-year old Harvard student was recently named to Forbes’ 30 Under 30 social impact list. Her contributions to stop cyberbullying led her to the honor.
The first-generation Indian immigrant was the victim of cyberbullying herself, which prompted her to create a new technology called ReThink. The program is designed to detect hurtful messages drafted online and prompts the author to stop and think about what they are typing before posting. “Basically, seeing how young people behaved online, on a social media like environment, when they had a chance to rethink saying something offensive, 93% of the time, young people change their mind,” she said of the technology.
More than 5.5 million young people have used ReThink, and the technology has reached over 1,500 schools, with more than 500,000 app downloads. The founder of the new technology has also partnered with groups like Scholastic and the U.S. State Department to stop cyberbullying.
