Sex Abuse Claims against Catholic Clergy Quadrupled in 2019

| Grant & Eisenhofer P.A. Civil Rights | Blog & News

Sexual abuse has become far too prevalent in recent years—particularly among members of the Catholic priesthood. According to the Washington Post, in 2019, allegations of sex abuse by the Catholic clergy increased 4-fold compared to the prior five years. The annual audit released by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops surveyed 200 diocese and religious entities across the country. The audit showed that there were 4,400 reports of clergy sex abuse allegations against minors during that timeframe. In 2015, there were only 903 allegations. When investigating the allegations, researchers from the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate noted that 57% of the alleged abuses took place before 1975.
